Model kits come in many different scales or sizes. All those numbers can be confusing, but it is actually fairly easy to understand how scale works. The "scale" of a model is it's size relative to the size of the "real" version. So compared to a 1:24 scale model, the real version is 24 times larger in size or 1:1 in scale. Example; In the Electronic Rulers for Plans and Maps. Slide this ruler across the surface of plans, maps, and blueprints and read the measurement on the digital display in one of 111 different scales including inches, feet, yards, miles, centimeters, meters, kilometers, or a scale you define. In many countries, measurements in cm or mm are more acceptable than inches. Now, those who were wondering how big 1/14 scale in cm or mm can be at ease. I have also put that measurement for you. 1/14 scale RC size in cm is approximately 30-35cm in length (300-350mm), 13cm in width (130mm) and height is 10cm (100mm). The commonly used scale ratio sizes in this range include 1:32 scale, 1:35 scale, 1:43 scale, and 1:48 scale. 1:43 scale is a popular size of die-cast model cars in Europe, Asia and the US. It has its origins in the British / European O scale for model trains and the rise of certain accessories made for that scale which since have become popular in their own right. Models in this scale are 10–13 cm length (3.93–5.11 inches).
Thing is, the larger in scale, the more realistic the cars feel. And when you get to 1:32, weight, design, construction and tuning all become much more of a consideration than 1:43, which is largely magnetic, hammer down action. 1:32 is also possible to run cars very successfully without magnets (1:43 can to, but not nearly as well). If you are interested in a particular aircraft, do a little research on the internet and find out the length and wingspan of the full scale plane. Divide that figure by 72 to get the size of a 1/72 scale model or by 48 to get the size of a 1/48 scale model of the same plane. A B-29, four engine bomber from WW-II has a wing span of 141 feet 3 To be honest one of the reasons I am looking at 1:43 scale is the price. Since I do HO scale trains that would be the natural choice, however the pricing of some of the 1:43 that I have seen is too low to ignore the difference in overal cost. Take, for example, a 1/6 model of an action figure—this means that the model is one-sixth the size of the real-life object it represents. Generally speaking, this scale works out to be around 30cm or 12 inches tall, although this may vary depending on the manufacturer and the exact model being used. That’s why 1/6 action figure is often Scale has two distinct, sometimes contradictory meanings in die-cast minatures. Originally, scale indicated a ratio of how large a model was in realtion to its prototype. If a model of a truck was 9 inches long, and the real truck was 90 inches long, then the ratio between the model and the actual truck was 1:10, and the scale was 1:10, also written as 1/10. When model trains were first created, there wasn’t any standard size, which meant that you would end up with trains that couldn’t be placed on the same tracks as another. Manufacturers eventually realised their folly, and introduced some standard replica train scales, as listed below: Z scale – 1:1220. N scale – 1:160.
My preferred scale is 1/43, one that has a worldwide appeal like 1/64. As we see new 1/43 offerings gradually migrate into the seventies and eighties, there is no shortage of subjects. While many consider the mid-to-late seventies to be the “Malaise Era” because horsepower was down and federal regulations, like huge bumpers, seemed to
So I went with 1/43 and haven't been disappointed. Here's a pic of 2 vehicles about a couple inches away from a boxcar on track. As you can see, the 1/43 in front with 1/48 scale boxcar in back. Its not that noticeable the scale difference even though the larger is in front. The 2nd shot is of a 1/43 in front and a 1/50 truck in front of it.
